Paul Rice is a designer/artist who has enjoyed working in many different aspects of the arts and entertainment industry. His background in fine arts, studying at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn and at St. Martins in London, and growing up building parade floats at his father’s company in Memphis, fostered an interest in all things creative. Paul has worked extensively in sculpture, painting, model making, and puppet design.
Working with Andrew Benepe, Paul has created 22 Pumbaa’s for productions of The Lion King around the world. Paul has also puppeteered on Broadway in the role of 'Milky White' for Into the Woods in the dancing cow puppet designed and built with Andrew. Paul worked with Jim Henson Studios in New York on Little Shop of Horrors for Broadway. Paul recently made fully articulated wings and costume for Kanye West. Paul has also worked with Julie Taymor in Across the Universe, credited as ‘Puppetmaster’ in charge of the 'psychedelic circus' portion of the film.
Paul went on to work with Julie in her studio, assisting in character design for her opera Grendal and creating the melting sandcastle in her recent movie The Tempest. Paul also has worked as a sculptor for movies such as Spiderman III, The Proposal, and The Smurfs.
Recently Paul has been working as an Art Director with Production Designer, Darcy Scanlin, designing sets and installations for commercials,music videos and movies.
Paul has simultaneously kept his fine art career going by showing in galleries in New York City, Philadelphia and Santiago, Chile. Paul was commissioned in 2010 by Surfrider Foundation to design and create “armor” for dolphins.
